Top Trail Running Spots in Miami for Your Next Adventure
Miami is often associated with its iconic beaches and nightlife, but for those of us who crave more rugged terrain and the beauty of nature, the city has plenty of hidden gems for trail running. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just getting into trail running, these spots offer a mix of scenic views, challenging terrains, and a break from the urban hustle. Here are my top picks:
1. Virginia Key North Point Trails
Located just off the Rickenbacker Causeway, the Virginia Key North Point Trails are a personal favorite. These trails wind through coastal landscapes, offering a mix of hard-packed sand and dirt trails surrounded by mangroves. You'll get stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. The variety of loops also makes it great for different skill levels, whether you’re looking for a quick run or a longer, more challenging session.
Tip: Pack water and electrolyte drops for the heat and humidity, especially during the summer months.
2. Oleta River State Park
As Florida’s largest urban park, Oleta River State Park is a trail runner's paradise. The park offers a network of trails that wind through thick mangroves and native flora. The terrain is mostly flat but technical, with roots and rocks that will keep you on your toes. It’s a fantastic place to lose yourself in nature while being just minutes away from the city.
Pro tip: Bring your friends for a group run or volunteer with local park initiatives to give back to the community while enjoying the park.
3. Amelia Earhart Park
Another great option is Amelia Earhart Park, located in Hialeah. The park offers a variety of multi-use trails, some of which are great for trail runners. You'll find wide dirt paths, shady trees, and beautiful lakeside views. It’s a great place to mix up your running routine, and if you enjoy switching between running and mountain biking, this park offers both.
Bonus: This is where my trail running club, Bearly Runners, recently held one of our runs. It’s a welcoming spot for runners of all levels.
4. Tree Tops Park
Just outside of Miami, Tree Tops Park in Davie offers a serene escape with its lush greenery and well-maintained trails. The park’s elevated trails are perfect for hill training, a rarity in South Florida. The towering trees and abundance of wildlife give this park a unique vibe, making every run feel like an adventure.
Note: It’s also a fantastic place to spot wildlife, so keep your eyes open for interesting birds and other animals during your run.
5. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
For a run with both history and breathtaking ocean views, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne is a must-visit. The trails here are sandy and can be challenging in the midday heat, but the vistas of the Cape Florida Lighthouse and the shimmering Atlantic Ocean make it worth every step. Plus, the park is less crowded than some other tourist spots, allowing for a more peaceful run.
Each of these spots offers its own unique trail-running experience, from technical terrain to stunning oceanfront views. No matter your skill level, Miami's trails have something for everyone.
